SAN VALENTIN (Día de los Enamorados - Valentine´s Day)

El día de San Valentín en España, los hombres y mujeres cuidan mucho expresar su amor.

Normalmente los hombres suelen regalar ramos de flores a sus parejas. El regalo más común son las rosas a las chicas y libros a los chicos. Aunque no es un día de fiesta oficial, las parejas enamoradas pasan el día juntas, sin importar que sea festivo o no, para comer o para tener una cena romántica.

Valentine's Day in Spain, the men and women take much care to express their love for each other. It is the usual practice of the men to gift their couple bunches of flowers. The most common gifts to be given on this day are roses to the girls and books to the men from their girls. Though Valentine's Day in Spain is not officially a holiday, amorous couples still spend the day together, careless of its being a holiday or not, for have the meal or have a nice and romantic dinner.

AUNQUE LA MONA SE VISTA DE SEDA, MONA SE QUEDA (Refrán - Spanish saying)

This refrán indicates that there is no use in hiding defects or blemishes, since they will be discovered sooner or later and then we will make a fool of ourselves. It refers to both physical and moral defects, or to the desire of showing off what we are not.

There are other expressions with this same meaning. For example, el hábito no hace al monje...

LOS REYES MAGOS (Three Kings Day)

Esta madrugada, ya en el día 6 de enero vendrán los Reyes Magos a dejarnos los regalos (o el carbón).

Es un día muy especial donde la diversión comienza esta tarde cuando los tres Reyes Magos salgan en la Cabalgata por las calles de las ciudades, lanzando caramelos a los niños.

Mañana por la mañana los niños (y no tan niños) se levantarán para bucar su regalo y comerán el Roscón de Reyes. Es un dulce, con forma de donut grande cubierto de azúcar y frutas confitadas. Dentro hay un juguete de plástico, así que ¡no lo comas muy rápido! y quien lo encuentra tendrá suerte durante el año. pero si en lugar del juguete encuentras un haba, ¡tendrás que pagar el Roscón!

This daybreak, already in January 6th, the Three Kings are coming to give us presents (or sweet coal).

Is a very special day where the fun starts this evening when the three kings lead their procession through the streets, throwing sweets to the children.

Tomorrow morning, the children (and not so children) will wake up to find their presents have been left overnight and everyone also will eat Roscón. It´s a sweet, big donut-shaped bread covered in glacier fruits and sugar. A plastic toy is buried inside the mixture, so don't dive in too quickly. He or she who finds the toy gets good luck for the next year. But, instead the toy you find a bean, you´ll pay the Roscón!
