NOCHEVIEJA EN ESPAÑA (New Year´s Eve in Spain)

La celebración de la Nochevieja española normalmente comienza con una cena familiar. Se dice que llevar ropa interior roja nueva trae buena suerte.

Si quieres pasar una Nochevieja española, después de la cena, debes esperar a las doce y tener preparadas doce uvas para comerlas cuando el reloj suene.

A la medianoche, cada vez que el reloj suene, hay que comerse una uva. Cuando el reloj deje de sonar, todo el mundo debe haber acabado sus uvas y empieza el Año Nuevo, pero nadie las acaba a tiempo, lo que es muy divertido porque todo el mundo comienza el año con la boca llena de uvas y se felicitan y brindan con cava o champagne.

Después de la cena familiar y las uvas, mucha gente se va a fiestas en pubs, dicotecas,... Estas fiestas se llamán Cotillones de Nochevieja, con confetti, matasuegras, sombreros...y normalmente duran hasta la próxima mañana cuando la gente se toma para el desayuno un chocolate con churros.

Spanish New Year's Eve celebrations usually begin with a family dinner. Spanish tradition says that wearing new, red underwear on New Year's Eve brings good luck.

If you want to spend a Spanish New Year´s Eve, after family dinner, you have to wait until twelve p.m. and have twelve grapes ready to eat when the clock starts to chime.

When it is midnight, each time the clock chimes, you put a grape in your mouth. By the time the clock has finished chiming, everybody has to have finished their grapes and the New Year starts, but nobody ever finishes eating the grapes on time.

Eating the grapes is very funny because everybody starts the New Year with a full mouthful of grapes and people greet each other and toast with sparkling wine such as cava or champagne.

After the family dinner and the grapes, many people attend New Year parties at pubs, discothèques,...These parties are called cotillones de nochevieja, with confetti, party blowers, party hats, etc. and usually last until the next morning and have the traditional winter breakfast of chocolate con churros (hot chocolate and fried pastry).

¡INOCENTE, INOCENTE!

El 28 de Diciembre se celebra en España el Día de los Santos Inocentes. Aunque sus orígenes son sangrientos (es el aniversario del asesinato de muchos niños cometido por Herodes en Judea), actualmente, este día es divertido.
En este día la gente gasta inocentadas (travesuras o bromas) a los amigos y parientes: la gente hace bromas esperando que las víctimas se lo crean. Cuando la gente cae, el bromista dice: Inocente, Inocente!. Los periódicos y otros medios de comunicación también lo hacen, publicando falsas noticias. Es el equivalente español al April Fool´s day.

December 28 marks a day of celebration called the Day of the Innocents. Although the roots of this day are bloody (Is the anniversary of the murder of many children committed by Herod in Judea), in modern times, this day is very jovial and fun.

On this day, people play inocentadas (pranks or practical jokes) on friends and relatives: people make jokes hoping that the victim believes the false thing. When people get caught, the joker says: "Inocente, inocente!" ("Innocent, innocent!"). The newspapers and other media are in on the joke as well, reporting false news. It´s Spain's equivalent of April Fools' Day.
